Hi friends and welcome to Another World is Possible!

I’m Annette, mother, writer, and self-confessed selkie1, living and swimming on the east coast of Ireland.
A (reformed) nature and climate activist with a love of trees and wild swimming, I write to find ways through the cracks of this breaking, broken world, and to dare imagine a future more beautiful.
How do we reclaim our power, in a system that insists we have none?
And what might this look like for me, for you, for all of us?
I want my words to make a difference in the world. I want to inspire, which is to “give breath”. Inspire people, inspire change, inspire hope: hope as the lifting of a weight, the tending of a wind-blown flame, and momentum. I write to make the revolution irresistible.
May you find this space a refuge from the daily grind – a pause, to catch your breath, and slow down long enough to notice the beauty of this aching world, our only home.
Another World is Possible is free for all, and I want to keep it that way. Let’s be honest, I like free content just as much as the next person, and where would I be without the public library?!
That said, writing takes time and effort, and I also want to thrive, unapologetically. So can we think about paid subscriptions as a kind of honesty box, powered by entraide2 – where those who can afford it pay, so this Substack remains free for everyone, rather than the preserve of the already privileged.
Together, let’s make the revolution irresistible.
All subscribers receive my monthly sea swimming write-up One Month A Swim, as well as essays, updates and the odd poem. The paywall goes up on each post after three months.
Paid subscribers also get a signed copy of Sensual Soul Shine (EU + UK addresses only), access to the full archive + comments, and the feel-good knowledge that your contribution keeps Another World is Possible free for all.
Alternatively, you can opt for a one-off donation here.

When you subscribe, every new post I publish in Another World is Possible will go directly to your inbox. I promise not to spam you with loads of mail, and I will never, ever pass on your information to anyone else.
For a better reading experience, consider downloading the Substack app, so you can tap the heart icon, share on Substack Notes or other social media, and join in the conversation(s).

About me
A writer, wild swimmer and (reformed) nature and climate activist, I live by the Irish Sea in Wicklow, Ireland, with my husband and our four French-Irish kids.
You can find me and my words within the pages of The Art of Wild Swimming: Ireland and Swimming Wild Ireland: A Celebration of Ireland’s Incredible Wild Swimming Communities, both by Vicky Allan & Anna Deacon.
In 2024, I became a published author with an essay on my first ever skinny dip. Read it in Sensual Soul Shine: the Reclamation of the Feminine (free with an annual paid subscription).
I recently launched the SELKIE CIRCLE, an online women’s journey through the seven stages of the Selkie's story, to reclaim our power in a world that insists we have none.
With love & relentless hope,
Annette x

In Celtic lore, a selkie, or seal-woman, is a mythical creature that shapeshifts between seal in the water and human form on land, by putting on or removing her sealskin.
Entraide translates ‘mutual aid’, but it doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, does it?
